Gas for Your Cream Whipper
The gas for a cream whipper is nitrous oxide, N₂O, and it comes in a small steel charger that holds 8 grams or a touch more. Every standard cream whipper on the market takes the same charger, whatever brand is printed on the dispenser, so you do not need to match brands. We stock Supremewhip 8.2g chargers from $55 for a box of 50 and deliver across metro Melbourne in about 10 to 35 minutes, to customers 18 and over, for culinary use.

Which gas goes in a cream whipper
Nitrous oxide, and only nitrous oxide. It dissolves into the fat in cream under pressure, and when you pull the lever the gas comes out of solution and expands, which is what turns 500ml of cold cream into about 1.5 litres of whipped cream in a few seconds.
The mistake people make is grabbing a CO₂ charger instead. Soda siphon chargers are the same size and screw into the same holder, and the result is sour, fizzy cream that refuses to hold a peak. If the box says CO₂ or soda, it is the wrong gas. If it says N₂O, nitrous oxide or cream charger, you are right.
You will see 8g and 8.2g on different brands. They are interchangeable. The 8.2g simply carries a little more gas per bulb, which over a box of 100 is a difference you notice.
Will these chargers fit my whipper
Almost certainly yes. The charger thread and the charger holder are a standard across the industry, which is why the same bulb works in a $26 whipper from Big W and a $165 iSi from a restaurant supplier.
| Your whipper | Takes a standard 8g N₂O charger | Can run off a 660g or 3.3L tank instead |
|---|---|---|
| iSi (Gourmet Whip, Cream Profi, Thermo Whip) | Yes. iSi sells its own branded chargers and any standard 8g charger has the same thread. | Yes, through a regulator and adaptor hose |
| Mosa, Kayser, Liss | Yes | Yes, through a regulator and adaptor hose |
| Avanti and Appetito whippers (the ones Kmart lists) | Yes | Yes, through a regulator and adaptor hose |
| Generic aluminium 500ml or 1L whippers from Amazon or Big W | Yes | Yes, through a regulator and adaptor hose |
| Skywhip Pro 500ml (ours, $55 with three tips) | Yes | Yes, through a regulator and adaptor hose |
| Soda siphons of any brand | No. They take CO₂ and will not whip cream. | No |
| Hand pump or battery cream makers | No. They use no gas at all. | No |
If your dispenser is not on that list, send us a photo of the head on 0468 893 888 and we will tell you before you order. The cream whippers page covers the dispensers themselves if yours has given up.
How many chargers you need
One 8.2g charger per 500ml of cream. A 500ml whipper takes one charge, a 1L whipper takes two. Fill the whipper to the line, never past it, screw the charger in until you hear it release, shake it eight or ten times, and dispense upside down. Our guide to using cream chargers walks through it step by step with the common mistakes.
A box of 50 gets a home kitchen through a couple of months of weekend pavlovas. A cafe doing cream on every second coffee gets through a box of 50 in a few days, which is when the bigger packs and the tanks start to make sense.
What the gas costs
| Supremewhip 8.2g cream chargers | Price |
|---|---|
| 50 chargers | $55 |
| 100 chargers | $80 |
| 200 chargers | $135 |
| 300 chargers | $185 |
| 600 chargers | $285 |
| 1,200 chargers | $550 |
| 1,800 chargers | $800 |
Starting from nothing, the Supremewhip bundle pairs the chargers with a whipper, from $100 for 50 chargers plus the dispenser. The full charger range is in the cream chargers category and our notes on which brands are worth buying are on the best cream chargers page.
Charger will not seat or no gas comes out
Four causes cover nearly every case. The charger is CO₂, not N₂O, so check the box. The charger holder was not screwed on far enough to pierce the bulb, so unscrew it and go again until you hear the hiss. The rubber gasket inside the head is worn or missing, which lets the gas leak straight back out, and a replacement gasket fixes it. Or the cream is too warm to hold the gas, which is not a gas problem at all. Cream and whipper both want to be straight out of the fridge.
When a tank makes more sense than bulbs
Past a couple of hundred chargers a month, a 660g or 3.3L tank is cheaper per charge and gives you one cylinder to return instead of a bag of bulbs. The tank connects to the same whipper through a pressure regulator and adaptor hose, which are sold separately, so text us before you order a tank for a whipper and we will confirm what you need. Sizes and prices are on the nitrous oxide canisters page.
